Street Cruising

Duz 12

I showed up early at Redcliffe for the shoot with Michael Boardman.  I drive a VK and I had spent the day at the hot rod show, so I was more than a little keen to meet Michael and his tough streeter.  When it rolled in, I was not disappointed in the slightest, nor was I disappointed when the lovely Cassie showed up to accompany it.  The beautiful paint job on this 1985 VK Commodore Executive is Asteroid Silver, and for a back shed paint job, looks absolutely top shelf.

The engine bay has not been overlooked in this build on the inside or out of the 308 engine.  Let's start at the bottom.  The crank is .030 and balanced.  The cam is a Crane 286 hydraulic and the heads have come from a VN Commodore and are bolted on with a ARP Head stud kit.  Yella Terra supplied the roller rockers and the rocker covers are custom sheet metal.  Twin Holley Blue fuel pumps get the fuel to the Holley 750 double pumper and sucked in through a Harrop single plane manifold.  The gases get out through 1 3/4" pacemakers into twin 3" exhaust. This modest combination has been good enough for 301 at the wheels on the dyno.

The power gets delivered through a stage 2 shift kitted Trimatic, with 3800 Converter shop converter, through to a minispooled Borg Warner with 4.11 gears.  The wheels are BSA 18 x 8s on Falken 235/40/18 rubber.  This combination has run a best at the drags of 12.55 @ 109 mph.  The suspension is 90/10 on the front and VR 6 cylinder on the rear, and the entire car has been recently rebushed.  Stopping is done by the standard VK 4 wheel disks.

Inside the VK has had the once over as well.  VP Clubsport front seats replaced the standard.  It has a 1/2 custom roll cage and the dash has been removed and all the gauges are now Autometer.  So what about stereo then Michael??????  "There is absolutely nothing in there" - Not even anything to fill the hole.  When your car sounds as good as this one, you don't need music.

Michael would like to thank a few people:  His step dad Pete, his brothers Daniel and Chris and of course his lovely wife Rachel.  This isn't the first VK for Michael either.  He had a VK Calais.  After getting done for illegal street racing, it was confiscated by the boys in blue.  When he got it back he sold it straight away.  He had a VN for a while but eventually found his way back to a VK.  Lucky for us he did, because this is one very nice and very tough street car, and if the stunning VK isn't enough to get those heads turning, then I am sure the lovely Cassie will be.
